In May 2022, VMware released CDS on Google Cloud VMware Engine (GCVE), as a partner now you may extend your multi-cloud control plane to GCVE to manage infrastructure and application running on it.

In comparison with Asset-heavy of on-prem VMware Cloud Director (vCD) that partners owns all physical resources like server, router, storage, security and running facility of data centers, VMware Cloud Director Service (CDS) provides Asset-light solution to enable partner to extend managed services outside of existing data centers while still leveraging familiar skillset and tool. CDS is the same code base as vCD and its functionalities as well.

Next in this article, we will go through how to build up CDS service on GCVE. Here is the overall solution that includes four building block:

  • GCVE: Google Cloud VMware Engine where SDDC and workload resides
  • CDS: Cloud Director Service to setup multi-tenancy
  • VMware Chargeback Service: generate usage report and monitoring by individual tenant
  • vRealize Operation Cloud (vRops Cloud): provides monitoring and operation of SDDC for provider, also has pre-defined dashboard via management pack for CDS

Note: we will choose Tokyo region to deploy all these services. And you will receive activation email of each service including activation URLs.

Starting from https://console.cloud.vmware.com we login then select the Organization the service to be activated.

We start with vRops Cloud, after clicking the activation link we should select correct region to deploy the service, making sure you select the right one because it’s one time setting.

Just a few seconds, it will redirect you into the service

Because it’s new service in you Org, you need to assign appropriate right to users of this service.

So now when you switch to Org view, you should see the vRops appears and is accessible.

Follow up we will activate CDS service with the activation link received, here we should select which Org we will put the service into.

With few clicks now we see the CDS service also added into our Org. The last service will be Chargeback, so let’s finish it with respective activation link.

Similarly we need to choose Org and the region as well, we should select the Asia Pacific region in Tokyo. Maybe you ask why we did not choose region for CDS, because CDS may include multiple instances and each instance may locate in difference within the CDS service.

Finally we will all these three services successfully activated and the whole activation process is direct and quick.

Warp up: The whole activation is simple, before starting we should have the Org created and accordingly activation link received, as well as choose the right region because it’s one-time setting.
